April 10, 2020 -“Outside the window”

Day 29 –

“Outside the window” by Genevieve Frenes

Peering out through the window,

The world looks fresh,

Like a baby opening his eyes

For the very first time,

We see a new world…

We look out of the glass,

Wondering when authority will tell us,

To be free again…

To roam like scattered children,

To chase time until,

We can no longer breathe.

This is how life existed before…

We roam slower now.

Outside the glass,

A few people walk by,

They stop and linger,

Admiring the landscape of the home

They never looked at before…

The delicate flowers, the lush grass,

The Easter decorations-

None of these existed before

To the eyes that merely passed

The beauty displayed, but ignored.

We hide in our homes,

Waiting for this illness to rid itself,

Of its effects on our community,

Our loved ones,

Our family.

The illness is a dreaded enemy,

Its hatred injures and kills the ones we love,

Yet, it exists as a longing voice,

Reminding us, “Pay attention now,

While time has slowed down for you.”

We give freely now,

Our food, our money, our time…

We extend ourselves, because

Our neighbor is our brother.

We love…

Without judgment,

Without thinking of self,

Without the “what ifs.”

We just give.

Outside the window,

We see the future,

The day we’ll roam beyond again,

But this time,

We’ll stop and notice

How precious life is,

And will continue to be…

When we are free.
